Ah, Cat Hair & Cat Shedding Combs
It’s one of the less charming aspects of cat cohabitation, but it’s something we must deal with. Cats do a perfectly fine job regularly grooming themselves, but ultimately, they shed their hair on the couch, your lap, and the floor, creating little tumbleweeds for you to find. Grooming your cat with a shedding comb is one way to stay ahead of the cat hair, and it’s a lovely way for you to bond with your feline friend.
Regularly brushing your cat helps prevent hairballs, an uncomfortable situation for cat and human. If you have a long-haired cat, regular grooming will prevent the development of matted fur that happens when tangles build on one another.
Furminator
The Furminator is a workhorse when it comes to tackling a cat’s undercoat. It has a comb with a row of small stainless steel teeth that are designed to get beneath the topcoat and get rid of excess hair. There is also a handy ejector button that helps push the excess hair out of from between the teeth. This is not the right tool for getting rid of mats and tangles, as it could pull too much hair or damage the teeth.

- FURejector button releases hair with ease
There is a long hair and short hair option, and the Furminator comes in two sizes. The size, in this case, refers to the width of the tool, and Furminator recommends the smaller size if your kitty is less than ten pounds. However, some users say they’ve used the larger size on a small cat and were able to groom a little more efficiently.
Pros: The handle is designed with the user in mind and is very comfortable, and the ejector button is a nice touch. Customer reviews point to this being a highly effective de-shedding tool that does an excellent job at getting rid of excess hair. This one has been Cat Loop tested, and we really like it.
Cons: Although Furminator sells a short hair and long hair version, some reviews we looked at say that this tool doesn’t work well on particularly fluffy and long-haired cats. Others say that the long hair version works much better overall than the short hair. Also, you have to be very careful of the angle at which you stroke and the pressure you use—it can easily cause bald spots if you’re not careful.
Delomo Pet Grooming Glove
Delomo has produced an updated version of its pet grooming glove. The flexible glove features a palm and fingers covered in hundreds of soft, flexible rubber tips that pick up excess hair. It’s suitable for long and short-haired cats (and other pets) and gently picks up hair without pulling at it.

Your purchase includes one left hand and one right-hand glove so you can go all-in grooming your purring feline. You can also use the gloves to pick up excess hair from clothes and furniture. When the gloves are full, you simply peel away the hair and throw it away.
Pros: It’s extremely gentle, and many reviews we looked at said that their cats preferred the glove to other forms of brushing, and for humans, petting is a natural repetitive motion. The glove is also washable and features an adjustable wrist strap for added comfort.
Cons: Some reviews say that it’s harder to get the hair off of the gloves, but that did not seem to reflect the majority opinion. Like all things cat, there are going to be fussy kitties who just don’t like the things you buy; we saw a few negative reviews because their fuzzy friend disliked the gloves.
SleekEZ Deshedding Grooming Tool
Upon first glance, the SleekEZ de-shedding tool looks very simple. It has a wooden poplar handle that looks almost baseball bat-like and a high carbon steel blade with waves of teeth. The blade is held perpendicular to your pet’s coat and gently rubbed back and forth to further loosen the hair. Then, gently stroke the blade down the back and sides to remove hair, dirt, and dander.
- Perfect grooming tool for shorter and wire haired dogs
- Constructed of poplar wood, waterproof with a "green" water-based lacquer
The blade can also be used on clothing and furniture. It comes in a small and a large size, but unless your cat is closer in size to a miniature pony, you won’t need any bigger than the small. If you have a household of different animals, the SleekEZ is appropriate for dogs, cats, and even horses.
Pros: The wood handle feels nice in the hand, and the tool seems very effective at removing undercoat hairs, according to customer reviews.
Cons: Reading some of the reviews, the tool is particularly good at handing short hair but is less effective with long-haired animals.
Bonve Pet Grooming Slicker Brush
This slicker brush is designed for small animals and features stainless steel tines that cut through the undercoat to get rid of loose hair. It’s great for digging deep, making this a great brush option for long-haired kitties. The brush also includes a button that retracts the tines of the brush, making hair removal easy.

Pros: It does a good job at getting at the undercoat—the tines go pretty far, which is a win-win if your kitty has a thick coat. Thanks to the ejector button, hair removal is easy, which is much appreciated when you have long-haired animals. According to reviewers, hair simply falls off into the trashcan without you having to touch it.
Cons: In order to brush, you have to hold down the button to protract the tines of the brush, which may prove uncomfortable for people with arthritis or have had problems. In addition, it’s not a brush that’s suitable
Hopefully, you have a kitty who likes being brushed, as it helps redistribute natural oils in the skin to leave a shiny, healthy-looking coat, reduces matting and tangles, and helps you have some one-on-one time with your furball.
